Welcome to the Northeast Nebraska Master Gardeners!
The Northeast
Nebraska Master Gardener program was started in 1984 by Extension Educators
Gary Zoubek and Chris Carlson, with twenty-four individuals completing the
training. Currently there are over sixty-five members in the Northeast
Nebraska Master Gardeners.
What is a Master Gardener?
Master Gardeners
are University
of Nebraska trained
volunteers who serve as educators within their communities.
To earn a title
of Master Gardener, individuals enroll in the program and receive 40 hours of
training, then give back 40 hours of volunteer time. After the first year,
volunteers annually attend 10 hours of training, and give back 20 hours of
volunteer time to their communities and master gardener projects. A series of classes covering the initial 40
hours of training is offered periodically, based on local interest. If you are interested in this series,
contact extension educator, Kelly
Feehan, or check our Education/Volunteer
Opportunities page.
The NE Nebraska Master
Gardeners is a very active, enthusiastic group and the opportunities for
training and volunteer time abound.
Most of our members far exceed the minimum requirements necessary to
maintain their Master Gardener status.
Do I Need to be a Master Gardener to Join?
Everyone is
welcome. The only requirements to join
are to pay your annual dues ($10) and to have a love of learning. Many of our members also choose to seek
Master Gardener status, but it is not a requirement.
No qualifications
or prior knowledge are needed. All
that is needed is a love of gardening and a willingness to help others. Some of our members have a very high level
of knowledge and skills, while others are just beginning their gardening
education.
If interested,
please attend one of our meetings, contact the Madison County Extension
Office at 402-370-4040. Guests are
always welcome!
