Health Hints Feb 17-21, 2003Thirsty?Water is your best answer to quench your thirst. You need 8 glasses (8unces or 64 oz. minimum). Incredible as it may seem, water is an important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off. Water regulates body temperature, carries oxygen where needed and helps remove carbon dioxide where it is not needed. It carries food to body organs and removes digestive waste. Also it maintains mineral balances in your body. Water serves as an important lubricant, keeping body tissues such as eyes, lungs and air passages moist. Water suppressed the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Research shows that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while and increase in water intake actually reduces fat deposits. Here's why. The kidneys can't function properly with out enough water. When they don't work to capacity some of their load in dumped onto the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. But, if the liver has to do some of the kidney work too, it can't work to it's fullest capacity. As a result they metabolizes less fat, more fat remains stored in the body and weigh loss stops according to Donald S. Robertson M.D. The overweight person may need more water than the thin one. Larger people have larger metabolic loads. Since we know water is the key to fat metabolism, it follows that the overweight person needs more water. The overweight person should plan to drink one additional glass for every 25 pounds of excess weight. Water helps maintain proper muscle tone by giving muscles their natural ability to contract and by preventing dehydration. Water helps rid the body of waste. Adequate water helps flush out the waste. Water may help relieve constipation. When the body gets too little water, it siphons what it needs from internal sources. The colon is one primary source. One result can be constipation. When a person drinks enough water normal bowel functions usually resume. If not check with your family doctor because other medical problems may exist. The amount of water you drink also should be increased if you exercise briskly or if the weather is hot and dry. Keep bottled water in your car for long and short trips.
